We will co-host this informative event along with the Sierra Club. Despite the fact that coal is a relatively small issue for Washington state residents, coal-fired power plants are the leading global warming culprit in the U.S., accounting for more than 30 percent of our nation’s carbon dioxide emissions. Accordingly, PSR has adopted a CODE BLACK campaign to address the harm caused by coal and in Washington we will be working with the Sierra Club to strategize how we might collaborate for a coal-free northwest. PSR National President and WPSR board member Dr. Evan Kanter will participate in the discussion.
Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility
Engaging the community to create a healthy, peaceful and sustainable world
Our goal is to create a healthy, peaceful and sustainable world through healthy solutions to the gravest threats to human health.
WPSR focused throughout the 1980s on conveying the Physicians for Social Responsibility message that there is no meaningful medical response to nuclear war and that "prevention is the only cure". Our parent organization, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 for pioneering disarmament initiatives. In the 1990s, we added environmental concerns, violence prevention and social justice to our list of principal concerns.
Energy and Peace
Among other things, WPSR is part of Save Our Environment -- a coalition of groups working toward clean energy solutions. Our country faces unprecedented challenges. In November, unemployment reached 6.4%-- the highest level in 14 years. America is still addicted to oil. The global warming crisis goes unabated. Now is the time to Repower, Refuel and Rebuild America.
Learn more about how to Repower, Refuel, and Rebuild America here.
