The Healthy Food in Healthcare Initiative

WPSR is working in collaboration with the organization Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) on a national initiative to create healthier food programs in health care institutions.

The Healthy Food in Health Care initiative complements WPSR's mission and program agenda in its efforts to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and reduce the use of toxic chemicals. Food grown without harmful pesticides has been shown to be more nutritious, avoids toxic exposures, and is produced with a lower impact on the environment.

This initiative intends to expand the concept of “healthy food” to include consideration of production, processing, distribution and procurement means.

The program aims to establish food systems that are environmentally sound, economically viable and
socially responsible, and, as
a result, healthier for all.

Within Washington State, WPSR is working with
hospitals to sign the Healthy Food in Health Care pledge
and to institute changes along the guidelines set forth in the pledge.
